I’m pretty sure my love of regional food was hatched at a very young age when I first noticed the Food Lion in Ocean City had different brands of potato chips then the Shop n Bag down the street from where I lived in South Jersey. From that moment on, my head has been on a swivel. Whenever I'm out of state, I make it a point to peruse the snack aisles at the local grocer or stop at a random gas station mart in search of; Utz in Maryland, Wise in Philly, Middleswarth in, Central Pa, etc. But now, thanks to the internet, all these foodigenous chips are available at our fingertips.
Prior to writing this food blog and like 2 years before Lays came out with their “new flavors" contest, I started my own part time potato chip company named Jersey Flavored which featured tastes native to The Garden State. Now I
don’t want to call myself a potato chip innovator (other people should do that), let’s just say long before Herr’s was selling their tasty Romano’s Stromboli and Long Hots & Sharp Provolone chips, I was busy playing culinary chemist in a pay-by-the-hour kitchen in Englewood Cliffs making bags of Disco Fries, Texas Weiner and Boardwalk Pizza that I sold at neighborhood farmers markets.
So, as I pondered next steps for the blog, I've decided to get back to my roots and blend my love of regional chips with the blog. In 2025, be on the lookout for a new monthly Chipigenous segment discussing taste, texture and history.
If you have a favorite bag of local chips that you think the rest of us NEED to know about, hit me up and I will put them on the list.
